Hospital Corpsman in the second platoon of Hotel 2/5 in 1967. Lt. Pendell was platoon leader, Staff Sergeant Beauqua was second in command in the platoon. The company commander (Captain), who has several gaping scrapnel wounds in his arms, was from Philadelphia, but ironically rang my doorbell in 1982 to announce he had moved here to Portland. However, I haven't seen nor heard from him since that time. Base camp was An Hoa, but our platoon spent most of its time along the Nong Song River at the North end of the A Shau Valley.

I served with Hotel Co 2/5 in 1968, An Hoa (Quang Nam Province). Sometimes it's like yesterday, and at other times it seems like a completely different life. I found Don Spring on your web page and called him on the phone. It was great to talk to him. I didn't know if he had made it back to the world or not (for all these years). I hope I can be listed among the members.

Our country may be in grave danger now, but you brave men and your memory is the inspiration that gives me hope. I was with supply company. During Tet 1968 I and several others from our section were assigned to Hotel Co. I was there during the arrival into Hue city in Feb 1968 starting at the Medical School and going from house to house for the next 7-10 days until we reached the outskirts of the city. Then reinforcements replaced us. Michael Osuch kept me alive during the whole encounter. I went back to battalion supply and we moved back to An Hoa where I completed my tour.
I have recently been having problems since the invasion of Iraq and went to a VA consuelor for advise regarding post traumatic stress. She was very helpful however, she said we were in an area exposed to Agent Orange. Is this true?

Just wanted to let my fellow marines know that I have found Doc Ware on this site and since then we have gotten together twice, and the stories we have told. He has also helped me get my purple heart from the injury I received on April 22, 1967, plus a lot of other medals I didn't even know I was intitled to get.He was like a brother in Vietnam and now he is also a great friend. I am still looking for Cpl. Thomas Glass, if anyone knows where he is or what has happen to him, please let me know. He also was in Vietnam in the time frame of Feb. 67 to Sept. 67. Sure would be greatful for any help in finding him.

My buddy, Alvin Ellenwood, was in Hotel, 1969 - '70, would like to hear from anyone that shared experience around that time. He's a great guy, has his shit together and is a nurse in the ICU where I work. He said it's cool to post his info, he's off line for awhile 'cause he just got a house and hasn't set up his computer yet. Jonathan T. Lazarus (cancundudley@netscape.net)

I was with H2/5 from 1/67 until 2/5/68 (I was on operations Swift and Essex and Union and Hue City, among others) when a sniper got me during the battle of Hue where I was serving as a squad leader (my nick name was "Barney") in Hotels' 3rd platoon. Lt. lambert was the platoon commander at that time and he recommended me for the Silver Star for actions adjacent to Hue university where we were mounting our first attacks on the NVA holding Hue during the 1968 TET offensive after we got to Hue from Phu Bai. About a year later the medal was actualy awarded to me after I had been discharged and had returned to civilian life. I've always wanted to share a copy of the citation with other Hotel and 2/5 vets since they deserve it as much as I do. Perhaps there is a way for the web master to post a copy of it if there is sufficient interest. Fast forwarding to the present, I recently became a father for the first time at age 51 thanks to my wonderful wife Bonnie. Since 1984 I have been working with people with disabilities a a vocational rehabilitation counselor here in Albuquerque. The last reunion I attended was in Las Vegas in conjunction with the 1st Marine Division annual event that year which I think was around 1994 or 95'. I look forward to attending another one as soon as possible with my new son so he can meet other Hotel and 2/5 veterans and learn more about the proud heritage of the 5th Marines.

Hello out there. I joined the 5th. when 3/27 went back to the world. That was Sept. 68 I stayed with the 5th. until July 69, extended and went to the Wing in DaNang. That was pretty rough compared to humpin through the Arizonas, QueSons, Phu Locs and all those other fine areas. Does anyone out there have info. on Al Bresser, Rick Wackle, L.B. McDonald, Tabu, Don Lowe, Bobby Dash, 6 Woody. Joe Pongetti, my memory is starting to fade if I had only known I was going to live this long I would have taken better care of myself.

I joined Hotel Company 2/5 from 3/5, just before the Company went north on PRAIRIE, in early Fall,1966. I served mainly as 3rd Platoon Commander with Hotel throughout PRAIRIE. Then down to the AN HOA region, where we subsequently made MISSISSIPPI in antenna valley; and numerous patrols of all kinds.
On the first day of LINCOLN, my eleventh operation, on the last of my many combat patrols, I was severely wounded, and almost died, on January 9. My radio operaotr, Bob Meyer, was mortally wounded next to me. And our Platoon Corpsman, Jerry Holub, was seriously wounded at the same time, as well.
For the only time I even know of, the helicopter pilot, after trying to land in the hot zone, lost his nerve and took off rapidly toward An Hoa. The men I served with then more or less spontaneously stood up, called the helo pilot and said, in effect, "Whoaa! Where are you going? It's not bad down here; look, we're all standing up." Our Company Gunnery Sergeant, Gunny Husak, even removed his flak jacket and skivvy shirt, and said, "Try to land the helicopter on top og the guy with his shirt off, where it's safe"[!]. Our Company Commander, Captain Jerry Doherty, told some of the men nearby that they'd have to stand up, but they did this mostly voluntarily, and there was a quick ripple effect thereafter. Had the men not done this, then I would surely have perished. SEMPER FIDELIS.

I am sorry I was not a member of 2/5, but couldn't figure how else to post a message. My childhood best friend PFC John W. McFarlane 1st Plt. H Co. 2d Bn.5th Mar Div.was a member. John and I were best friends and grew up together from the 7th grade. We experienced Boy Scouts, discovered girls and just enjoyed our innocent lives as kids do. He was killed April 11, 1968. I arrived in Country 1 year later and continued to serve 33 years with the Army & Army reserve. Today is Nov 11, 2003 Veterans Day and I thought it appropriate to reflect upon my friend. I am trying to locate the Combat After Action Report for his unit for April 11, 1968. I understand the unit was engaged in operations outside of Hue. I would be interested in corresponding with anyone that could help me in this endevor. Thanks to you all for your service "Welcome Home Brothers".

Just like to say high to all the guys that stareted it all. I was among the men of H 2/5 that left Okinawa in April 1966 and boarded the USS George C. Clymer for an ocean cruise to Chu Lai. Anyone remember our first night, on the beach. Then being sent to Hill 10, only to be greated by S/Sgt Guiterrez the next morning (after our first firefight). I still remember him climing the hill and yelling "Good Morning Veterans." I remained with H 2/5 until March 1967, 14 Operations later WIA Opeation Tuscaloosa.

I was with Hotel Co. from Jan. 69 until my med-evac on Oct. 30 69. I was riding in the jeep that "Kelly" was driving. I was on my way back to the bush after my R&R. If anyone out there knows the names of the other two Marines that were in the jeep with us, or how to contact them, I would be forever in your debt. This has to do with long forgotten awards that were to be given. Now that we're getting on in age, my grandchildren are after me to see whatever happened to them. Who knows, it may even help me to finally "come home"
