“The Discovery Channel have commissioned a new series about those who served on the front-line of the Vietnam War. Using dramatic reconstruction, archive footage and new interviews with American and Vietnamese veterans, the series will be based around four major battles: those at Ia Drang, Dak To, Khe Sanh and Hue.

But rather than assessing the battles from the point of view of politicians or generals, the aim is to create an authentic sense of what day-to-day life was like for people on the front-line, and how it felt to be in the middle of the battles.

London-based production company Brook Lapping is producing the series for Discovery. They have a strong track record across the world for producing thoroughly-researched and compelling documentaries and drama-docs (see ). They are interested in hearing from veterans of the battles who can talk openly and honestly about their experiences, regardless of rank or post-War career.

Discovery Channel Cancels Project

I write with very disappointing and totally unexpected news. Since you very kindly helped us with our search for veterans of the Vietnam War, Discovery Channel have decided not to go ahead with the series.

This has come as a total shock to all of us here. We were working on the understanding that the series would broadcast next year and had no reason to believe otherwise.

Although their relationship with Brook Lapping Productions remains strong and we were on course to make an amazing series, Discovery have made their decision on the grounds that the proposed four-part series wouldn’t have fitted into their current remit for much longer twelve or thirteen part serials.

I think we are missing out on the chance to tell the most important, compelling and heroic stories you could hear. But it’s their money and ultimately their decision.

We hold out hope that someday we may be able to revive the project in some form, in which case the leads you created for us will be extremely useful, but for now I hope you’ll accept my apologies for this totally unexpected outcome.

On the Vietnam Series The 10,000 day war there was a documentary series in which archive film was mixed with interviews with actual participants! :D
