2/5 H&S Battalion Supply March 68 to June 69
I arrived in Phu Bai March 68 and was assigned to 2/5 Battalion Supply. From there we moved down to An Hoa. I became NCO in charge of BN Supply and was assigned to DaNang where my driver "Rich" and another (who's name has slipped me) ran supply runs from DaNang to An Hoa almost daily in a stolen Sea Bee's 6-by.
Rich and I were in An Hoa one evening and were late to catch up with the convoy heading back to DaNang. We were young and foolish then and made a bad decision to head out alone to catch up with the convoy. Never did catch up with it...We were on that road by ourselves from An Hoa until we got to the Liberty Bridge. Even saw a NVA flag flying from the tree line on our left just miles from the bridge. I would say the Good Lord was looking out for Rich and myself that afternoon.
If anyone was with 2/5 BN Supply from 68 - 69 and remembers "John Doe" send me a e-mail message. The only two Marines that I can remember their full names are Danny Dean and John Hardy. John is a African American who was wounder there in An Hoa with a foot injury from an incoming mortar round. I saw him in DaNang at the hospital before being shipped out. John was/is from Florida somewhere. I regret not getting names and addresses before getting on the chopper ride to DaNang from An Hoa... after doing 15 months in-country. Guess I was in a hurry to leave. Semper Fi to all my brother Marines who served in Vietnam! God Bless You All!1500 Glenn Meade Dr.

I was the Sgt. in charge of the An Hoa LZ from December 1969 to May 1970. I had three tours. Arrived in country March 1968, left May 1970. I just returned from a trip to Vietnam one week ago. The place sure has changed. You have to know what you are looking for or you won't know it was there. I was in Hue and spent about three days. I spotted some old USMC dog tags in a old store. Went back and they were closed. I was going to buy them all and bring em back. The S/N numbers were on either side of mine. I will go back and bring those dog tags back out.

I was a 2533 (Radio Op) and was 'farmed' out to various companies and locations from our first spot at An Hoa to anywhere along Hiway 1 to Battle of Hue City. Most of my time I was signed out to an 81mm FO and went through five of them during my tour.
There were numerous (nameless ops) and I did all the 'camping out' I ever want to do...but am planning to go to Vietnam this spring (2004) for a Ham Radio Expedition and see what I knew back then was beautiful countryside...this time without bullets, napalm etc.
Was fun to go through the site here and discover that our first CO (Cheatum) went so far in the Corps.

Joined H&S 2/5 Comm Plt as 2533 in ChuLai in Aug 1966. Became a forward air controller. Called in air strikes and medivacs the whole time there. 2/5 moved a month later to the DMZ for Prairie. Spent a couple of months there then relieved 3/9 at An Hoa. Never spent much time in the rear. Would go out with one company and then on their return assigned to the one going out again. Needless to say, alot of named combat operations under the belt. Spent alot of time with all companies. Was assigned to Foxtrot Co. on Union 2 when Paul Graham got his Medal of Honor. Left in Sept 1967 with one purple heart. You guys were America's finest. Over the years the names have faded but what you did will always be remembered especially those who made the ultimate sacrafice. Thank you and God Bless all of you.

This posting is on my brothers behalf. His name is Mike Gillespie, USMC, served with 2/5, H&S. He arrived in Nam aboard the USS Okanogan on 15 Aug 65 and departed July 66. My time in the Corps and Nam was 70-71. I wanted to let anyone who knew my brother that he passed away almost 15 years ago from heart failure. Even though we were both Corps Nam vets he never would talk much about it. It was to painful for him and I know his time was more difficult than my own.
I know I'd want to know if one of my buddies had passed on. I just recently obtained a copy of his records to post correct info on him. Semper Fi, Tom Gillespie

I served with 2/5 from 1/64 'til 7/65. We sailed from San Diego for Okinawa as a battalion. When we arrived in Okinawa we became 3rd Bn 9th Marines. We stayed about a month in Okinawa, then sailed for Vietnam from White Beach. The rest goes without saying. When I left Nam in 8/66 3/9 was at An Hoa. I heard that shortly after I left An Hoa got hammered really bad. Never heard any more. I was one of the last of the originals to get to go home. Semper Fi Sgt. Gep

I arrived in An Hoa July 67. I worked as a radio tech/operator and my Company Commander was Captain Dan Powers. Our Bn. CO was Colonel Ernie Cheatham. Went to Phu Bai, then on to Hue. Participated in TET 68 and got my flight date at Vu Ghia pass. While in Hue, saw captain Ron Christmas being brought in to the BAS wounded. He had a big smile on his face and a stogey in his mouth. Returned to Camp Pendleton- 5th Amtraks and then to 13th Motor Transport where I was discharged in Dec. 69. Was diagnosed with Diabetes a couple years ago and the VA associated this with exposure to Agent Orange. I encourage all Vets with diabetes to contact the VA and get help. A friend who was in 1/5 is the email address holder. I was in-country with H&S Co, 81mm Mortar Platoon from April 1966 to October 67. I would really like to hear from anyone that was in 2/5 and would especially like to hear from any of the old 81mm Marines. I would also appreciate any back or current newsletters about reunions.
I like to hunt & fish. If you can't get me I'm probably at the Lake Fork.

I was in FDC for 81 mortars..(H&S Co. ..ya missed listing that one, so I figured I'd join Echo Co. since I spent a lot of time with them and we left the An Hoa basin together in Sept. 1970. From Feb. '70 till Feb.'71. I looked on this page to see if I remembered anyone. I spent most of my time along Liberty Road heading out of An Hoa on such stellar places as "Hill Farmer, Half Way point, and Liberty Bridge." I now live in Pa. working and playing and teaching guitar.....To all of you....welcome home. Barry

I was with H & S communications - Nov. '67 - Mar. '68. I was in charge of radio supply in An Hoa until we went to Phu Bai then Hue City. I was hit in Hue and sent home. A Marine named Richard Griffin saved my life by jumping on me when a gook threw a grenade at me. This happened March 2nd 1968. I would like to see Griffin again if anyone knows him. One more thing, there was a red headed Captain that played the guitar and would sing to us in Hue, anyone know who he is?

After the Gulf war the Marine Corps changed one unit into the special operations unit T. R.A. P. and this unit was Dragons. We stopped using the dragon tank defense weapon and started training for T. R.A. P.(Tactical Rescue of Aircraft and Personal). We deployed to Somalia and Ruwanda conflicts. As some of you may not know this unit was exstinsivly used in Somalia, Ruwanda, Kosivo and is widely inuse today. This was the unit to save the down pilot in Kosivo and save civilians in Ruwanda. It was also used one major movie called Rules of Engagment with Samuel L. Jackson and Tommy Lee Jones. This showed the importance of a T. R.A. P. force and its capabilities. This unit was the backbone of the Marine Corps search and rescue for Special Forces, Embassies, Pilots, and Civilians. I am PROUD to have been apart of unit that had great Marines sever and die in this unit.

I am putting this under 2/5 even though mmy friend Stephen Matherson was with both Charlie Co. and H&S Co. 1/5 there are no sites I can find in helping Stephen locate other marines he might have served with when he was with 1/5 during his second tour in Vietnam in 65/66. While he hwas with Charlie Co. 1/5 he served with 81mm was a squad leader and M-60 Machine gunner; when he was moved to H&S he was both a company sniper and a Battalion sniper with 1/5. If there are any of you who may have served with Stephen you may contact him through my e-mail address which is missionsintl@earthlink.net. Came over to Nam & H&S 2/5 from the states as a "newbee", Feb 1970. Ended up being initially assigned to the 106's (up near the 81's - does any1 remember the old French house?) and the rats on bunker watch? Shipped out to Liberty Bridge where I sat for a week or 2 & then came back in to AnHoa. Was reassigned to Flames Platoon up at "Golf Sector" (across the road from the battalion - on a small knoll overlooking the battalion area). Pulled a LOT of patrols, humping a radio, out along the old railroad tracks, and across a blown-up railroad bridge. Stayed with the company and made the move down to LZ Baldy, made a brief visit to the QueSon Mts. where we got "socked in". Shortly after coming down from the mountains joined the former H&S Company commander (Capt. Robert O. Tilley) and went on down to G Company CUPP. The "dust bowl" that AnHoa was....well, a lot of memories of that old place. And the endless patrols and ambushes out along Duc-Duc well, those jungle boots got a good deal of "breaking in". And the memories of the villages with G Company too. The proudest times and moments I ever spent in over 12 years in the Marines was with the 2nd Battalion 5th Marines in Vietnam. Things no one will ever be able to take away. I miss the friends and acquaintenances A LOT now that we're getting old. Where are the guys? Cole, Petrisevac(sp?), Patterson....where are you guys? Any1 that remembers the old times - stop by & say "hi". I'd appreciate it.

I joined the 106mm recoilless rifle platoon in Feb 68 in Hue City, at the end of the battle. I came to the battalion straight out of boot camp, ITR, and MOS training. After reporting to 1st MarDiv in DaNang, I flew to Phu Bai on a C-130, and then was put on a truck convoy up to Hue. I was an assistant gunner (loader) on a 106. SSgt Long was the 106 Plt Cdr, and LtCol Cheatham (now LtGen retired) was the Bn CO. After Hue, the 106's were sent out by sections to support the letter companies on bridge security between Phu Bai and DaNang. The Bn CP was located for a while in "The Tunnel" (a railroad tunnel), then moved to Phu Ghia Pass. Some of the places my gun was deployed to were Nui Noc Bridge, O'Brian Bridge, Hill 88, the Seabee camp near the Tunnel, and Hai Van Pass. We got hit in a few of those places. In the summer of '68, the battalion deployed to An Hoa, where the 106 Plt had perimeter security while the letter companies were out on operations. I volunteered for Combined Action Platoon (CAP) duty in Aug 68 and was transferred out of the battalion. I retired from the Corps in 1988 as a MSgt. Despite having served only six months in 2/5, I have always considered it my parent unit.

I came over to 2/5 around march of 70 after the 26th Marines left Hill 10 I was wit H&S co. comm.section I was a TACP 1/4 operator (MOS-2531). I was assigned to Golf co.as there 1/4 our AO was all those nice places every one talks about. I have always wondered what happen to those guys I left behind in H&S people like a L/Cpl Santos Taberis? R.J.Dumont? and many others I can't remember. I left AnHoa in Sept.70 we were in the process of tearing the place down and moving which cost me one day of my flight date I guess that holds true to the old phrase (hurry up and wait) If any one out there can recall me or any thing during that time period I would sure like to hear from you! I was in a peace time enlistment. Closest I came was when the hostages were taken in Iran 11/1979. I was in Subic bay, with the rest of 2/5. 2 day stand by. I'm very proud to have lived in Margaritaville. However, I feel very small, humbled and not worthy to hold my head up "too" high. Whilst, riding on thew coat tales of those who paid the price for 2/5. Forgive me. I walk the earth with a "shameful" pride. Proud to have served, but didn't do Jack-Shit. I'm 54yrs old now, run 2 11-minute miles (each day), can do 65 situps 2-minutes, 20 pull ups. Just in case I can help. Let me know. Ewe can turn around and I will be there for you! Sorry, I don't have much time to write this, I'm a student preparing for final exams and just searching the web. I spent some pretty hard and unforgettable moments as an enlisted Marine with 2/5 from 94 to 97. It was especially motivating being a member of the 2nd Battalion, 5th Marine regiment. Not only because of the significant history that makes up this great unit, but also because of the hard-core Marines from which it is made of. Thank you for making it possible for past and present Marines to take a moment and think back of the many moments; some bitter, some sad, some happy, but no doubt, all unforgettable. Semper Fidelis. 2nd Platoon, Bravo Company, 1st Engineer Battalion
I was attached to 2/5 and I was the Platoon Commander for the Engineer Platoon. Moved to Hue City with the Battalion Headquarters. I was shot twice while preparing to blow up a bridge near the University Apartments - this was on 7 Feb 68. Medi-evac back to Camp Pendleton Naval Hospital via Tripler Army Hospital in Hawaii. Retired with 21 years both enlisted/commissioned in 1983. Currently work in the Plant Facilities Department of the Washoe County School District as an administrator to the Marine (H & S Company 2/5 who provided infantry support) who picked me up after I was shot the first time and while dressing my wound, I was again shot thru the right arm and the same bullet hit him - THANKS FOR PICKING ME UP. To the other Marines who eventually were able to retrieve me after a period of time - THANKS. I still remember being brought back to the BAS in a pickup truck and LtCol. Cheatham, Navy Catholic Priest & Medical Personnel being there and their concern over my welfare.
Married 34 years to my best friend - Patricia - who has had to live with all problems that I brought back from Viet-Nam; two daughters - five granddaughters and one son who is a Captain in the Air Force & stationed in Japan. I have been blessed with a good partner (wife) and three successful children. A person can't ask for too much more than that in this life. Dick Squires1900 Marla Drive

I would like to hear from anyone who was with 2/5 from July 68 to July 69. I was with Flames Plt. I am in contact with some of our brothers. I may have info on someone your looking for. Or you may be able to help me find someone that I am looking for.
I arrived at Phu Bai, then onto Phu Gia Pass, then to An Hoa. Was on all the op.'s from Mameluke Thrust to Muskoee Meadow, when we came out of the Arizona, when Phu Loc 6 was over run sometime in June of 69. Though Vietnam changed my life forever, as I know it did many of yours. I will always have the Marines who I served with in my heart. The finest group of people I will ever meet in this lifetime or any other.37 Neck Hill Rd.
